In a disturbing article in The Daily Beast, writer Michelle Goldberg lays out the case for Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's ideological extremism. It's required reading in the wake of Bachmann's widely praised GOP debate performance.
Bachmann saves her most bizarre beliefs for the gays. Apparently her husband is one of those crackpot therapists who believes in a gay "cure" and, just last year, compared homosexuals to "barbarians." At a 2004 speech at which then-state representative Bachmann warned that gay marriage would lead to indoctrination of small children into homosexuality, she reassured her audience that she has nothing against homosexuals, saying:
"Any of you who have members of your family in the lifestyle, we have a member of our family that is," she said. "This is not funny. It's a very sad life. It's part of Satan, I think, to say that this is gay."
The strangest story, however involves Ms. Bachmann running from a ladies room, screaming and tears, after a lesbian constituent (and former nun) approached her with a question. Being alone with lesbians in a ladies room left her "absolutely terrified." You can read it all here.
