An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 has hit Japan, making it the 5th largest quake ever recorded by the US Geological Survey. The quake also spawned a powerful tsunami that swept away everything in its path and engulfed the airport at Sendai. A ship carring 100 passengers was swept away. Assessments of dead and missing have just begun. Here is video of the tsunami sweeping inland in northeastern Japan:
Tsunami warnings have gone up from Russia to Hawaii, California and Oregon. In Hawaii, people have been ordered away from coastal areas.
